THE ROSARY FOR CHILDREN

A spirit filled happening by Colleen McGuiness-Howard

The Rosary for Children recording was conceived because of a young mother's concern at New Age meditation given at her children's Catholic school. Consecrated to Our Lady of Fatima and launched on 13 May 1998 in Perth.

Western Australians Brenda Croft and her friend Jenny Knight, also a housewife and young mother, believe they were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the phenomenon which is sweeping Australia and beyond its shores has now gone into many countries around the world. From humble beginnings indeed with the major production taking place in a backyard garage/studio, and the narration added in the deserted corridors of a Catholic College after hours, clergy, religious and lay have enthusiastically recognised the recording's great evangelising potential.

The Vatican has also written on behalf of Pope John Paul 11 conferring the Apostolic Blessing on Brenda and Jenny and His Holiness' pleasure at receiving a copy.

To date The Rosary for Children is being distributed in the United States, Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore. The recording has been played in New York on Radio Maria, EWTN radio, on BBC radio in Belfast (over 300,000 listeners)and on many other radio programs. Also on long distance education radio in outback Australia and on a community radio station in Sydney.

Responding to the need for such a recording which is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world, Sydney bought 2,500 copies in the space of one week when it was formally introduced by a speaker in November 98. And 1000 were purchased over one week-end in Adelaide in February 99. An initial order came from the United Kingdom one week after its launch and a newspaper article in Liverpool created much interest and subsequent orders. One very excited 86 year old Leeds mother telephoned her non-Catholic daughter living in Perth to send her a copy of the "the rosary from downunder".

During a tour of the UK and Ireland in May/June 1999 over 7,000 copies were sold in the space of 5 weeks culminating with a talk given to over 5000 people at Knock for the annual All of Ireland Rosary Rally.

Although designed primarily for children, it has achieved instant recognition and appeal for every age group from toddlers to the elderly. Peace! is the overriding theme, and it's a sheer delight to listen to, with the warm, gentle voice of the young female narrator captivating listeners with the most marvellous story ever told- that of Jesus' life. Within the meditations, are also powerful messages of truth and direction included for everyone-regardless of age or gender.

A priest gives the introduction and final blessing, while music and lyrics created for the recording are sung by a 12 year old girl, accompanied by a 13 year old. The 3 boys and 3 girls who recite the rosary following each meditation range from seven to nine years of age. Some sound effects were created on the spot, and the beautiful narrative/meditation was written within a period of two weeks.

At Perth weekend parish drives, sales average around two to three hundred upwards with piety stalls subsequently stocking the recording and are continuously replenishing once word is out.

Who buys it? Virtually anyone and everyone. The elderly in care situations, grandparents for grandchildren, mothers for their children and to give to schools- and here it has similarly really taken off with many children now saying a decade a day in their classroom while listening to the recording.

Children's Rosary after-school groups for primary and secondary students are also now springing up using the recording as their base with mothers and grandparents joining the groups. Clergy, religious, lay, teachers, housewives, generally buy one, and then return to buy more as gifts.

Some international clergy and lay state its the best rosary recording they've ever heard, and Brenda and Jenny receive many letters daily from other states and countries congratulating them- and ordering more copies as well as constant phone calls. One truckie phoned for one crossing Australia's vast expanse and an elderly Italian, refusing the pray the rosary with his wife, now delightedly prays constantly with the recording.

The ultimate, perfect gift, it includes the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries. People have a copy in their car and another in the house with mothers doing housework while listening, and one farmer's wife plays it on her tractor. People at parish promotional drives consistently say they've been waiting for something like this for years, with one non-affluent lady, buying 30 to give away, and others buying sometimes 6 and ten at a time. Priests and parishes have bought large numbers to use for Baptism and First Holy Communion gifts and to give away.

For the first time in the lives of some children, and as a refreshing reminder to the older generation, the life of Jesus through the Rosary is entering and re-entering into their hearts and homes. This uniquely Australian recording has certainly the stamp of the Holy Spirit, Jesus and His Mother- because if it's "by their fruits you will know them" the incredible success of The Rosary for Children recording exemplifies those biblical words.
